Look what Santa brought!

Last week I did a new born baby shoot in Surrey for a couple whose wedding I photographed last summer - it was so nice to see them again, see their home and their lovely 3 week old baby.

We were worried that William might cry the whole time as he had had a very bad night the previous night, but, although not at his happiest, he was very obliging, especially when placed in my grandfather’s old suitcase!

This is their Christmas card this year!

Newborn babies always look like they have the worries of the world on their shoulders!

The proud father…

… and grandmother - I think they’re having a conversation.

After all the excitement it was time for a sleep. Have a happy and peaceful Christmas William and parents.

Newborn Tobias

It’s not often I get to cuddle a 2 week old baby so it was a treat to visit Tobias in his home last month and take pictures of him. He was settling into a routine of sleeping during the day and being awake at night, but on this day he seemed very reluctant to miss any of the action!

tobias01.jpg

Isn’t he lovely?!

tobias08.jpg

Daddy was on the last day of paternity leave which was great as he could be in on the shoot.

tobias19.jpg

It’s nice to concentrate on the details sometimes.

At last he is rocked to sleep and wrapped up in a shawl.

It’s exhausting work being the centre of attention.

You cannot imagine this little baby as a stroppy teenager or a bearded man, but it will happen one day! I look forward to seeing you grow, Tobias.

A christening in London

This christening was a lovely excuse to have a weekend in London! It was a lovely sunny summer’s day (maybe a little too bright for photography… we’re never happy!).

harry001.jpg I took some pictures in the bedroom using some lovely window light just before Harry was getting dressed up.

harry007.jpg

He is such a photogenic little chap…

harry011.jpg

… and is also very smiley.

All dressed up in his finery.

The ceremony was in the local Catholic Church in Wimbledon - St. Winefride’s Church - a very impressive building with lovely light inside.

A nice record shot of all the guests.

Cousin Anabelle was fascinated by all the candles…

… and on the walk home she was happy to show off her scooter skills!

We used the only bit of shade in the garden to take some family group pictures.

Three young cousins - the mothers were very close at hand in case one of the little ones decided to leave the bench!

A Christening

Apart from the fact that the weather was awful, with non stop cold rain, and that the baby being christened was ill, it was a lovely christening!

georgia000.jpg

I arrived at the house at 8.15am to get some pictures of Georgia and her big sister before the service and while the house was still quiet.

georgia019.jpg

Georgia was at her best being allowed to kick around on the sheepskin rug that I brought along.

georgia032.jpg

Big sister Anabelle was much happier and easy to photograph.

The ‘children’s corner’ at the back of the church

Georgia was asleep by this time which was the best thing for her.

georgia118.jpg

Because of the rain all the family pictures had to be taken indoors, which was such a shame as the garden looked so beautiful. I brought lighting with me and ended up bouncing my flash gun off the ceiling for most of the group shots, which made them look more natural than direct flash.

georgia142.jpg

Anabelle refused to be in most of the group pictures but I got some lovely pictures of her absorbed in a book.

georgia151.jpg

Isn’t this just the best thing to do when you feel unwell?!

georgia153.jpg

Nearly forgot to get a picture of the cake, made by one of the grandmothers.

I hope you are better now, Georgia, and are back to your normal smiley self!

Anabel’s first photo shoot

This week we have pictures from a baby photo session. Little Anabel is just over 4 months old and very cute! I arranged to come over when she had had her morning nap so that she was awake and happy.

harmer05.jpg

This is Anabel in her christening gown showing off the lovely, hand made dress that is a family heirloom.

harmer10.jpg

harmer18.jpg

Pictures on the bed using natural window light always work well.

harmer22.jpg

We had to include the dog in the family picture!

harmer27.jpg

All wrapped up for the February weather!

harmer41.jpg

I brought a sheep’s fleece rug with me which looks lovely in baby pictures and seems to have a calming effect on little ones.

harmer44.jpg

harmer47.jpg

Beautiful eyes and porcelain-like skin.

harmer55.jpg

harmer56.jpg

Well, that’s a selection of pictures from the session - thank you to all the family members who helped to keep Anabel entertained while I was shooting!

A family portrait shoot in November

Well, the longest night is now behind us and the days will get brighter and longer, which is good news for natural light photography!

This photo session took place in November, which can be so dark and dreary but we were lucky with the weather and it was very mild (seems such a long time ago now!). Casper was keen to show me his garden and play outside so we started off there.

thurston-smith040.jpg

thurston-smith038.jpg

Actually, those pictures should be reversed, as Casper didn’t get a wet head!

thurston-smith024.jpg

I’m always looking for unfussy backgrounds and the decking was great for this.

thurston-smith058.jpg

By this time Rufus had woken from his nap and so we had a family group - I used a large reflector to bounce some light into the faces.

thurston-smith067.jpg

Such a happy little chap!

thurston-smith081.jpg

We later moved inside and I took a series of pictures with the boys sitting by the open French doors while I stood outside. Again I used the reflector to bring some life into the eyes.

thurston-smith088.jpg

thurston-smith100.jpg

thurston-smith148.jpg

I brought a roll of background paper with me which is great for creating clean looking backgrounds. We still only used natural window light.

thurston-smith161-copy1.jpg

So, now the dog comes into the picture - what a gentle giant! This next one is one of my favourites… you can tell that I’m also a dog lover!

thurston-smith162-copy.jpg

Rufus had a lovely clean face after that!

So here is a last one of the whole family before I sign off to continue Christmas preparations. thurston-smith174.jpg

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL! May next year be a healthy and happy one.
